Maybe We Should Have Named Him Greg

This past week, I’ve discovered a new side of Jacob:  gregariousness.

People often comment on what a happy baby he is, and some folks he sees regularly—one lady at church in particular—can get a smile out of him with minimal effort.

But this week, Jacob had a couple of opportunities to spend time with other babies.

And his whole world was rocked.

We attended both a sing-along sort of gathering where Jacob was thoroughly enraptured by the kids surrounding him.  I don’t think he’s ever seen so many babies in such a small space before.  Well, maybe in the nursery at the hospital, but those kids weren’t talking and walking and sharing Cheerios like these were.  We also went to a parent/baby yoga class, where Jacob giggled like a goon as I stretched over and around him, alternately reaching toward the ceiling and giving him nosey-kisses on his belly.

It’s not that I expected him to freak out or anything, but I also didn’t anticipate the positively gleeful response to being around other children.  This development means two things:

1.     I need to actively look into story time sessions at the library and seek out a not-yet-filled course of swimming lessons for our little man.

2.     I’m going to have to step out of my shy shell and start interacting with some mommas!  I’m not great at introducing myself and talking to strangers (or not-yet-friends, as the case may be), but with Jacob as a conversation starter, hopefully this will be easier than it has been in the past.  Wish me luck!

Motherhood thus far has certainly been full of challenges, and I don’t expect that to change anytime soon.  On the other hand, that means there’s always some way I can grow into a better person along the way.  And a better me makes for a better Jacob.
